Poaching threatens Gorongosa

In a communique, Mateus Muthemba, director of community relations, said the problem was complex because of the socio-economic values of the local people who are used to hunting wild animals.

Park statistics indicated 3500 animals — such as wild pig and other smaller animals — were killed each year and sold locally.

Gorongosa is an ideal elephant habitat for African elephants.
