Zimbabwe: Poacher Gets 17 Years

A MASVINGO man, Tendai Mutyairi, was sentenced to 17-years in jail for poaching a rhino at Matendere Range. Masvingo magistrate Mr Walter Chikwanha suspended 10 years of the sentence on condition that Mutyairi pays US$120 000 restitution to the State. The court heard that sometime last year, Mutyairi and two cousins Samson and Ishmael Mazhongwe went to Matendere Range with the intention of poaching rhinos. The trio killed one rhino at the range and wounded another one, which managed to escape. After killing the rhino, the court heard, the trio dehorned the dead animal.

SA Opposition Party Wants Action Against Rhino Poaching

South Africa’s official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party last week urged President Jacob Zuma’s government to pressure Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries to act to curb exports of poached rhino horns. DA water and environmental spokesman Gareth Morgan said: “South Africa needs to put pressure on our neighbouring countries, most notably Mozambique and Zimbabwe, to ensure that those countries make it far more difficult for illegally-gained rhino horn to leave the continent for foreign markets.” Morgan called for a multi-stakeholder approach to curb poaching activities in the region. “Winning the war against rhino poaching will be a difficult task. The demand for rhino horn from markets in Asia is growing, and its high value means that criminal syndicates will go to great lengths to obtain horns.”
